COMMON MYTHS AND FACT

1. I should brush my teeth straight after eating.

2. Extraction of upper tooth can lead to loss of vision(eye sight).

There is no relationship between extraction of tooth and loss of vision.If this were true,patients who removed all their teeth should be totally blinds.

3.Worm are responsible for tooth decay.

This is not true.Tooth decay occurs when the tooth enamel is destroyed.Food items such as pop,milk,candy and cake contain sugar,carbohydrates and starches,if these item stay on the teeth for longer time,it will cause tooth decay.Bacteria inside your mouth react with such food and produce acids.These acids cause erosion of the enamel on your teeth which is turn results in tooth decay over a period of time.

4. An extraction tooth need not a artificially replaced.

A tooth however badly decayed should be saved.However,if it has to be removed,it must be replaced as soon as possible.If the tooth is not replaced then gradually the teeth adjacent to the gap will start tilting towards this gap.Opposite tooth also grews down.There for a loss teeth must be replaced for aesthetic purpose but for stability of adjacent and opposite teeth and gum.

5. Teeth cannot be saved once they starting pain.

Teeth can be saved by a process called root canal treatment.In root canal treatment the infected pulp is removed and filled with dental material.

6. Root canal treatment is painful

Root canal treatment doesn't cause pain,it relieved the pain can be cause by damage tissue in the tooth.Root canal treatment remove this damage tissue from the teeth,there by relieving pain.

7. There is no need for a cap/crown over tooth after root canal treatment.

Following root canal treatment the tooth become brittle and more susceptible to fracture due to uneven force.Therefore,it generally needs protection with cap/crown.

8. Professional cleaning/scaling/removal of tartar loosen the teeth.

Cleaning of teeth help us to eliminate infection and is good for stability of teeth.This is done by a very blunt instrument which vibrates to clean the tartar which is build up around the teeth.After cleaning patient feel the gap between the teeth because removal of the tartar occupies the natural gap present between the teeth.

9. It is necessary to avoid dental procedure during pregnancy.

Regular dental treatment must not be avoided by pregnant women,but there is some procedure,such as x-ray or surgical dental procedure,which must be postponed for pregnant women. Generally 2nd trimester is the ideal period for the dental procedure during pregnancy.
